beowulf
Beowulf was inspired by my love of the epic poem, as well as John Gardner's 'Grendel.' I wanted the book to feel modern, but also rooted in the ancient. The cyclical nature of the poem is reflected in the illustrations. Collage elements in the character design connect this story to other mythologies. I composed each illustration to represent the aspirational permanence of societies of the past and present: tarnished splendor, rust, dried blood, and sunsets. I hope the illustrations reflect the way we revisit the old and make it new, over and over again.
